I stand on the balcony, absentmindedly carving something. It’s like doodling in a notebook while chatting on the phone—only instead of a pen on paper, it’s a knife on wood. A professional habit.
In the house across from me, a man sits on an identical balcony, lost in a book. He pays me no attention, so I study him freely—the lines of his face, the tilt of his head, the movement of his hands—all strangely familiar. When he turns a page, I hear the whisper of paper and catch the scent of an old book.
Then, a barefoot woman appears in the doorway. The wind plays with her long hair as the air fills with the aroma of sun-warmed amber. She hands him a cup and looks at him gently. As he takes a sip, I taste saffron and mint on my own lips.
Fragments of memory flicker like film strips. I remember now—we met five years ago on a street where he sold his poems, typed on an old typewriter.
