The wind screams in my ears; the cold bites my skin. Wait—am I flying? Shock steals my breath, but my mind stays sharp: Focus. Land. I tear through clouds—one, two, three—then everything slows. My heartbeat steadies as I hover at the edge of consciousness, until the rustle of leaves pulls me back. I wake mid-air, gliding over a rainforest.
I thud onto the earth. Above me, white cedars and cypresses stretch into infinity. Solid ground—thank God. But the chill gnaws at me. I trek deeper, until a clearing appears, carpeted in silver moss. I wrap it around my shoulders like a royal cloak. Warmth floods me—I am prince of this realm now. I crown myself with juniper and vetiver, drink nectar from flowers, scale trees with elf-like grace.
Am I a woodland spirit? Who cares. This is home. Don’t wake me.
