An island. A beach. I lie on the sand, gazing up. Above me stretches a boundless, shimmering ocean of blue. Waves roll and crash, one after another. I reach upward—the ocean dips low, and my fingers slip effortlessly into its cool embrace. The scent of salt hangs in the air, its tang sharp on my tongue. Then, a glint of light in the distance snags my attention. I stand. The ocean rises with me.

Cupping a hand over my eyes, I squint at the horizon. A translucent plexiglass boat bobs on the water, empty. I’m utterly alone. Suddenly, I spot the shadow of a lemon tree on the sand. I spin around—no trees in sight, let alone fruit. Yet the zesty bite of citrus saturates the air, pulsing through my veins like adrenaline. I step into the phantom tree’s cool shade, breathing deep.
